How can a small business get more sales?

4 Ways to Generate More Sales for Your Small Business

You’re a small business, and that can be a blessing and a curse. With the perks come the limitations: limited-time specials, limited inventory, and so on. While it’s true that your business is more likely to succeed if you operate under certain principles instead of trying to find the magic unicorn that will make you rich overnight, it doesn’t mean that you have to accept your smallness as some sort of limitation. In fact, the opposite is true. With just a few tweaks in how you run your small business, there are many opportunities out there for you to capitalize on.

For example:

  • Are there certain types of products or services that your target audience craves?
  • Or are there certain times or places where they might be more likely to stop by?

The good news is, these are all things that can be altered at any given time as opposed.

Talk to Your Customers Frequently

You may have noticed that big businesses, like Amazon and Apple, often have one-on-one conversations with customers. If you have figured out how to make a living off of your business, you’re going to want to do the same. Why? For one, it builds more trust and rapport between you and your customers. And, more importantly, it creates opportunities. Let’s say you sell lingerie. You notice that a specific type of customer is driving a lot of traffic to your website. Maybe it’s the woman who is obsessed with her shape, or the one who recently got married and is in need of some lingerie that is more sensual than g-string-y. Whatever the reason, you should know it. Start talking to your customers. You’ll be surprised how much attention you can get by just asking questions like “what are some of the issues or problems that you are encountering?” and “what is one thing that you would like to see solved?”

Always Be Learning

It’s tempting when you’re in business for yourself to get stuck in a rut. You might get comfortable with your products or services and your branding. If you stop learning and keep your ear to the ground, though, you will see opportunities that you might otherwise miss. Put down the textbook and pick up a blog. Pick up the phone and call an expert in a field that you’re interested in. Don’t be afraid to get a little side-eye when you hear your peers talking about the latest trends. Don’t be afraid to get a little ahead of the curve. As you continue to learn, you might be surprised at how many new opportunities open up for you.

Build a Strong Editorial Calendar

You may have noticed that many well-established brands have a consistent and effective editorial calendar. Once you have identified your most lucrative product or service, you should start to build a calendar of events around it.

Why? For one, it’s a great way to differentiate your brand while also serving as a marketing tool. If you sell lingerie, you could have a monthly “Lingerie Love-In” where you provide free lingerie for women who need it. It’s one thing to talk about the need for free lingerie, but it’s another thing entirely to have free lingerie in the hands of the people who need it.

Host an Event or Workshop Once Per Quarter

Many successful entrepreneurs have found that they can bring in a few thousand dollars at an event once per quarter. Why? Because many people are hesitant to make big purchases during the end of the year. And that’s okay! You don’t have to force people to buy at the end of the year. Instead, consider hosting a workshop or an event that targets a specific audience. For example, a local women’s business group might want to host a workshop on how to create a social media presence. A community college might want to host a workshop on how to create a budget. The point is, look for opportunities where you can target a specific audience and help them solve problems or improve their quality of life.

Offer Free Trials for Paid Programs

There are many programs and courses that offer free trials. Why? Because they want to build a customer base that might be willing to try out their paid service. But as a small business owner, you don’t have to wait for them to offer a free trial. Instead, offer a free trial on your own. Here’s how it works. Let’s say you sell a product that is a set of step-by-step instructions. Once you have created your course, you can let your customers know that they can try out your course for free. Just let them know: “If you decide to sign up for our course, it’s for free for a week.”

Final Words: Stay Consistent and Keep Doing What Works

A lot of people think that you need a secret sauce to make a lot of money. While it’s true that you want to find the best opportunity and seize the moment, it’s also imperative that you stay consistent. You need to do what works. If it’s blogging, then blog. If it’s using Facebook ads, then use Facebook ads. While it’s important to be prepared for the ups and downs of running a small business, it’s also important to remember that you can make the most of them.
